Subaru of America is recalling an estimated 228,648 2018 Subaru Legacy midsize sedans and Outback crossovers because a software error is causing the fuel display to malfunction.

Specifically, the low fuel warning light may fail to illuminate at the correct remaining fuel level and the miles-to-empty display may indicate a positive number when the tank is actually empty. With this scenario, a driver could unexpectedly run out of fuel, leading the vehicle to stall and increasing the risk of a collision.

To fix the problem, Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the combination meter software, at no cost to owners.

Owners can reach Subaru customer service at (844) 373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WTW-82.
